Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City is the third animated series in the Strawberry Shortcake franchise, after the Strawberry Shortcake's Berry Bitty Adventures series.

Premise[]

Strawberry travels to Big Apple City, where all the biggest names in baking go to get their break. Along with her cute cat, Custard, she teams up with her new “berry besties” – Orange Blossom, Lime Chiffon, Lemon Meringue, and Blueberry Muffin – as well as their lovable pets. Together, the entrepreneurial girls run their fabulous food trucks and enjoy daily adventures filled with laughter and singing as they strive to “bake the world a better place”.

Production information[]

  • On February 3rd, 2015, Iconix Brand Group purchases the assets of the Strawberry Shortcake brand and the Peanuts franchise.[1]
  • On June 30th, 2017, Wildbrain, known as DHX Media at the time acquires Iconix Brand Group for US$345 Million. The Strawberry Shortcake brand becomes a part of DHX's children's IPs.[2]
  • In the same year of 2017, concept art of the upcoming series were revealed. It was also revealed that the series will be 3D animated and in development. It was said by the brand that there will be 148 half-hours of content.[3]
  • The concept art and some promotional material were removed from DHX's website at an unknown date. Though Strawberry's stock photos were still used in some of DHX's analytics and presentations. The development of the series went quiet.
  • Trademarks were filed for a variety of merchandise on 2021.[4]
  • On September 9th, 2021. DHX, now known as Wildbrain announces the series and is expected to premiere on September 18th, 2021. Other things announced such as the CGI Specials, Roblox games and merchandise were included.[5]
  • It was revealed by Michael Vogel, a writer and creator of the series that during the production of the series in 2017, DHX/Wildbrain brought him on the crew to help figure it out. Eventually landing on the series, Berry in the Big City.[6]
  • On May 19th, 2022, Season 2 of Berry in the Big City is announced, with the first episode expected to air on June 25th, 2022.[7]
  • The rest of Season 2 is set to be released on Netflix on the September 21st, 2022.
  • Season 3 has been greenlit for launch expected to release on July 15th, 2023.[8][9]
  • On June 14th, 2023, in a tweet made by the official Twitter account of Wildbrain celebrating the anniversary of the franchise's creation, they revealed that the 3D specials will be released this fall.[10]
  • The Strawberry Shortcake and the Beast of Berry Bog special gets listed on Family Jr.'s website.[11] Shortly after it was listed, trailers of the special gets aired on the TV channel.
  • The Netflix release date of the Beast of Berry Bog special gets released and is released on October 2nd, 2023[12]
  • The Netflix release date for the Winterswirl special, Strawberry Shortcake’s Perfect Holiday, is released and is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on November 1st, 2023.[13]

Berry Big Specials[]

During the same time the first season of Berry in the Big City was released in 2021, Wildbrain also announced that there will be four, 44 minute long CG animated specials based on the four climate seasons spring, summer, autumn and winter. The specials also features The Peculiar Purple Pie Man and an one off character from the show Johnnycake Cobbler as antagonists in them, either playing major or minor roles in them.

Girl Tales Podcast[]

On October 30th, 2023, The Girl Tales podcast would release a crossover story featuring Strawberry Shortcake, titled “Strawberry Shortcake and the Ding-Dong Ditcher”, to tie into the Beast of Berry Bog special. On December 18th of the same year, a second story called “Strawberry Shortcake and the Winterswirl Storm” would release to coincide with the Perfect Holiday special.

On January 16th, 2024, the official Strawberry Shortcake YouTube channel, TikTok, and Instagram accounts would begin posting original 3D-animated short-form content, consisting of 15-second animations featuring the Berry in the Big City cast in comedic hijinks.

  1. Berry’s Best Outfits! - Strawberry dances as she cycles through the outfits of her previous incarnations. Video loops.
  2. Best Piano Player Ever?! - Custard plays an elaborate piano piece, until its revealed it’s in her imagination, and in reality she’s just jumping on the piano and making loud noises.
  3. Custard Gets A Cookie! - Custard notices a cookie jar and excitedly tries to get a cookie, accidentally getting the jar stuck on her head and tripping, flying out of the cookie jar, but she did manage to successfully grab a cookie and eats it. Video loops.
  4. A Berry Special Surprise - Strawberry waves at the camera, and presents a dish, when she takes off the cover, it reveals a miniature version of herself wearing the 1980s outfit. Camera zooms in on 1980s Strawberry as she does the same thing, but it’s the 2021 Strawberry underneath the dish. Video loops.
  5. Custard’s True Love - Custard and Strawberry run towards each other in slow motion, Strawberry tries to hug Custard, but the cat runs past her and begins eating a cake that was offscreen, much to Strawberry’s annoyance.
  6. The Spicy Snack: Orange Blossom gives Strawberry a piece of chocolate. Strawberry happily takes one, but it turns out to be spicy and Strawberry begins freaking out until Orange gives her a glass of milk. Strawberry downs the milk in one shot and calms down. Video loops. Orange Blossom’s arms are the only part of her visible.

  • The series has a more modern and down to earth approach. As seen by the setting of the show. With some exceptions like some of Lemon's inventions and implied magic by Cinnamon Swirl, this iteration's Santa Claus.
  • This series introduces a new recurring character in the series, Bread Pudding.
    • He is also the first reoccurring male character since the 1980s.
    • This series also introduces more adult characters unlike the past iterations, both in background and supporting cast.
    • This series also introduces a lot of new characters and some from the past iterations.
  • This series also introduces parents for both the cast and the other characters. Which is also never seen before in other iterations.
  • Four voice actors from Berry Bitty Adventures are present in the series. Andrea Libman reprises her role as Lemon Meringue, Diana Kaarina, who voiced Sour Grapes, voices Blueberry Muffin here. Shannon Chan-Kent who voiced Cherry Jam does Raspberry Tart's singing voice and also voices a minor character (Granola Crunch) and Ashleigh Ball, Plum Pudding's voice actress sings the intro for season one.
  • This is the first series to have episodes that aren't the usual length of 10-20 minutes per episode. The longest episodes of this series are 8 minute two parters.
  • This series is the first to depict LGBTQ+ elements in the franchise, with prominent gay characters like Lime Chiffon’s dads and Mr. Mangosteen, nonbinary and transgender people like Raisin Cane and Banoffee, and a sapphic couple in Aunt Praline and Kiki KeyLime.
  • In the R-rated movie, "Knock at the Cabin", this show can be seen playing on the T.V. One of the characters says that the show looks fun and educational. He then adds that, like a lot of children's entertainment, the show seems determined to instill in kids a sense of empathy and understanding.
  • In some countries in the world, the show is rated as 18+ on Netflix. Even though the show is never intended to be for that audience and is considered a preschool show on Wildbrain's catalogue website.
  • Berry in the Big City has the highest episode count in the franchise for any Strawberry Shortcake series, with over 100+ episodes, albeit with a much shorter runtime than its predecessors.
